Description
We begin our journey to the Salinas Reserve, located at 4,300 meters above sea level between the Misti and Pichu Pichu volcanoes.
Our first stop will be at a viewpoint where we’ll admire the scenic countryside of the town of Chiguata, with the three volcanoes of Arequipa—Misti, Chachani, and Pichu Pichu—in the background.
We’ll then head to the main square of Chiguata, where we can see one of the oldest churches in Arequipa. Before continuing to the salt flat, we’ll stop for breakfast.
Afterward, we head to the Salinas Reserve, a drive of approximately 1 hour. Upon arrival, we’ll see the salt flat spread out like a white blanket over the land (during the rainy season, it becomes a stunning mirror of water). We’ll likely spot vicuñas walking across the flat, and we’ll take fun perspective photos against the vast white backdrop.
Optional activities such as ATV rides or kayaking may be available depending on the season.
To finish the tour, we’ll visit small thermal pools known as Las Mariposas, from where you’ll enjoy a different view of the salt flat while relaxing your feet in the warm water.
We return to Arequipa, arriving around 2:00 pm.
Our final stop will be San Francisco Square (two blocks from Arequipa’s Main Square).
