Arequipa: Half day visit to Salinas National Reserve
Description
Escape the city of Arequipa at 06:00 am and ascend into the high-altitude wonders of the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve. This half-day adventure takes you to a place where the earth meets the sky at 4,300 meters above sea level, framed by the legendary Misti and Pichu Pichu volcanoes.
Tradition and Volcano Views
Your morning begins with a scenic drive toward the traditional village of Chiguata. Breathe in the crisp mountain air as we stop at a breathtaking viewpoint to admire Arequipa’s three giants: Misti, Chachani, and Pichu Pichu. After capturing the perfect panoramic shot, we’ll visit the historic main square of Chiguata to see one of the region’s oldest colonial churches before enjoying a local breakfast to fuel up for the salt flats.
The Magic of the Salt Flats
The highlight of the day is the Salinas Salt Flat, a vast white expanse that looks like a blanket of snow stretching to the horizon. Depending on the time of year, you’ll experience two different worlds: a dry, cracked white desert perfect for fun perspective photography, or a stunning «mirror effect» during the rainy season where the sky is perfectly reflected on the water’s surface. Keep your eyes peeled for wild vicuñas, llamas, and alpacas grazing in their natural habitat.
Relaxation and Peace
We’ll conclude our journey at the hidden «Las Mariposas» thermal pools. Here, you can soak your feet in naturally warm water while taking in a final, serene view of the salt flat—a moment of pure Andean peace.
We’ll return to the city center by approximately 1:30 PM, dropping you off just two blocks from Arequipa’s Main Square, leaving you the whole afternoon to enjoy the city.
